Gallery provides multiple access interfaces for accessing your data without using a web browser. These are very useful for integration with other web and native client applications. For the the Gallery 3.0 release we expect to release a RESTful interface documented at Gallery3:API:REST and there's been some discussion around creating an API that simulates Flickr which is documented at Gallery3:API:Flickr.
