Installing and upgrading themes

Where can I find themes?

Most themes can be found on gallerymodules.com (many thanks to dmolavi for setting up this page) or on the codex page Gallery 3 Themes.

Gallery 2 themes are not compatible with Gallery 3.

How to install a themes

Every theme has it's own folder in the "gallery3/themes" folder. Installing is as easy as uploading the theme folder and activating the theme

  1. Download the theme you want to use with your Gallery 3 installation
  2. Extract the compressed archive and upload the theme folder (e.g. "mytheme") to the "themes" folder in your Gallery 3 installation folder
  3. Browse to your Gallery 3 page and go to "Login -> Admin -> Appearance -> Theme choice"
  4. Click on the theme you uploaded
  5. At the top of the preview you will see click on "Active theme" (please note that the preview might not be 100% accurate)

Please be aware that most themes do not include a part for the admin area. So even after applying a new theme this part will most likely still look the same as before.

How to update themes

  1. Download the updated version of the theme
  2. Go to "Login -> Admin -> Maintenance" and click on "Turn on maintenance mode"
  3. Rename the existing theme folder in the "themes" folder of your Gallery 3 installation folder (e.g. to "mythemeold")
  4. Extract the compressed archive and upload the theme folder to the "themes" folder of your Gallery 3 installation folder
  5. Delete the renamed old theme folder (in our example "mythemeold")
  6. Browse to your Gallery 3 page to see if everything is working
  7. Go to "Login -> Admin -> Maintenance" and click on "Turn off maintenance mode"

How to uninstall themes

  1. Browse to your Gallery 3 page and go to "Login -> Admin -> Appearance -> Theme choice"
  2. Click on a theme different from the one you want to uninstall
  3. At the top of the preview click on "Activate theme"
  4. Delete the theme folder from the "themes" folder of your Gallery 3 installation. Do not delete the whole themes folder but only the folder of the theme you want to uninstall

Troubleshooting

Most themes are written by members of the Gallery 3 community on a best effort basis and without charging anyone anything for the development, maintenance and support of the themes. Please keep this in mind when you have problems with a theme.

If you have problems with any theme please go to the codex page of the theme (Gallery 3 Themes) and check for any information on support. Most theme owners have a forum thread to support you and get feedback on their themes.

If you can't find anything on the codex page please search in the Gallery forum to see if other users have the same problem.
