What are modules?

To properly explain what a module is let's look at the design concept of Gallery 3 first: Gallery 3 is designed to be lightweight, easy to use and install and as stable as possible. To achieve this, the core application (so the software you get when you download and install Gallery 3) only includes the most frequent used functionality (managing photos, commenting, user handling etc.)

So what about functionality that only some people want but that is still useful?
This is where modules come in. Modules allow you to add new functionality to your Gallery 3 and to extend existing functionality. The great thing about this concept is: everyone gets a Gallery 3 installation that does exactly what they want and which is as lightweight as possible at the same time.

To find out how to get and install modules please read the next chapter: Installing and upgrading modules
